Be careful what you wish for

The 1995 enforcement of a Chicago ordinance to ban the sale of spray paint was, by all public opinion, a good thing.  Of course the legislators knew it wouldn’t curb the taggers completely but I have to whole-heartedly agree that it has kept the majority at bay.  The gang paraphernalia had to go, but there is an argument I can understand to keep this unconventional art form around. In many countries where gaffiti thrives there are un-written rules amongst the artists that specific public spaces are off limits: schools, hospitals, churches, etc. There is also subjective eradication, wherein a city funded group will paint over or otherwise erase any “non-creative” work. Obviously there are flaws with each argument and I’m not saying I don’t agree with Chicago’s stance but I genuinely think we are missing out on some culture as well as a resource of untapped inner-city talent.
