Almost Swallowed by the Devil

“Poor Niagara!” is what Eleanor Roosevelt is said to have exclaimed when she first saw Iguazu Falls, where we visited today. These waterfalls which touch Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, are a majestic and awe-inspiring sight from the Argentinian side. The national park is a collection of trails to various lookouts over different waterfalls, but the coup de grace was the source waterfall at the end, the Garganta Del Diablo, or Devil’s Throat. The power of the water constantly flushing down the massive horseshoe-shaped waterfall was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. And not only did we get to see the unbelievable sight, but we also participated in the event as we shielded our eyes and our cameras from the thick spray of water the wind was directing our way.

Here’s a short bit of the falls for you to experience back home:

My advice for other travellers: if you are limited on time and have to do only one of either the Brazilian side or Argentine side, go with Argentina. The park is much larger (budget around 6-8 hours there) and the view of the Devil’s Throat beats any other. Entry cost is currently $130 Argentine Pesos, around $26 USD by today’s exchange. We paid extra for an official tour which gave us transportation straight there and handled the border crossing between Brazil and Argentina. You can do it on your own but you have to take a bus to the border, cross, and then wait for a different bus on the other side to take you there. After a long day of hill walking and sweating we were so glad to have avoided the hassle of taking bus after bus and dealing with the border crossing on the way home.

Also recommended for budget travellers: Favela Chic Hostel, with a cool vibe, lots of common areas, full kitchen, clean bathrooms, and eggs&sausage included for breakfast. Currently R$30 (about $15 USD) for a bed in the dorm, more for private rooms. Also right near the downtown, just a short walk up the street.
